Ingredients

  • ¾ C water
  • ¾ C granulated sugar
  • 1 large or 2 medium sized cinnamon sticks
  • 1 orange
  • 10 whole cloves
  • 750 ml red wine
  • 50 ml brandy
  • 100 ml Cape Ruby port

Instructions

  • 1. In a saucepan, combine the water, sugar and cinnamon stick. Bring to the boil, reduce heat and simmer.
  • 2. Cut the orange in half squeeze the juice through a sieve and pour the juice into the simmering mixture. Push the whole cloves into the outside of the orange halves and then place both halves in the simmering mixture. Simmer for about 30 minutes until thick and syrupy.
  • 3. Add the wine, brandy and port and heat until steaming. Do not allow to simmer. Remove the clove-studded orange halves. Serve hot in mugs or in glasses.
  • 4. Note: If serving in glasses remember to preheat the glasses in warm water because cold glasses will break.
